Cuticles and Follicles - A Short Film
MY FIRST PROPER SHORT FILM??
I’ve been wanting to make some short films for a loooooong time. I have built up a lot of filming knowledge, experience of directing talent and I have a range of equipment now - after being a DoP and filmmaker for over ten years now. But I have never produced a larger scale project for myself - I usually film short documentaries and interviews with people but I have wanted to make something more constructed.
And I have started with this film - something I would describe as a ‘curated documentary’ or something along the lines of that - unscripted by planned.
It took a lot of planning- finding the location - which I settled on a beautiful barber’s in Deptford named Patrick and Son - a Caribbean destination in the area - the family were wonderful and trusted me on using their lovely venue.
Then there were the props. And then finding the amazing actors and models, some I have worked with before and some I have not.
We have: Jadesola Odunjo, Oreoluwa Shoyinka, Michelle San Reis, Delight Temile and Veronica Boahene. The chat was natural and perfect.
ONE MAN SOLO VIDEO PRODUCTION
On a technical level - I used the Blazar Remus lens range - shooting anamorphic - and it made me fall in love with anamorphic.
I filmed on a slider and and Fx3 - I chose the FX3 partly because the space was so small I needed to do my own sound and that allowed four track audio easily. This was very much a one man production show.
I like working in very small teams - even to the point of just working alone! But I’m learning it’s good to have help when you can - in this case - the size of the space did not allow for this.
Anyway with no further a do:
